    Dietetics and Seasonal Eating: The Ayurvedic Way

    The preservation of health is easier than the cure of disease. Ayurveda aims to protect the health of the healthy and alleviate disorders in the diseased. To fulfill the first objective. to keep the body away from disease, Ayurveda has described three pillars of life Ahara (Food), Nidra (Sleep), and Brahmacharya (Celibacy). These three well-regulated life factors give immunity, strength, complexion, and body growth. In Ayurveda, dietetics forms the major component of life.

    Ayurveda describes a specific diet in terms of quality, quantity, and time which differs with body constitution, age, season, digestive power, disease, and also from person to person. Dietetics is medicine in itself. Food’s effect reflects on the body and mind; “The food you eat reflects your state of mind”. The father of Western medicine, Hippocrates stated, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”, he advocated the healing effects of food. With the knowledge of Ayurvedic dietetics, we can prevent many diseases before they occur and treat them after their occurrence.

    Rules of Consuming the Food For Dietetics

    • The food should be fresh, warm, and easily digestible.
    • Food should be consumed only when a person feels hungry and it should be eaten after the last meal has been digested.
    • One should eat food in a comfortable sitting posture, neither too fast nor too slow.
    • Proper chewing of food is necessary for the proper digestion of food.
    • Water should be taken half an hour before a meal, one hour after the meal and if needed then only a sip of water can be taken in mid of the meal.
    • One should not eat food while watching TV, on a phone, on a laptop, or when emotionally upset.

    Properties of food according to tastes

    • Sweet– Moist, cold, heavy, expectorant.
    • Salty-Laxative, digestive, appetizer.
    • Sour-Carminative, appetiser.
    • Pungent-Bronchodilator, anti-helminthic, carminative.
    • Bitter-Anti-helminthic, purgative.
    • Astringent-Anti-diarrhoeal, styptic.

    Naturally Best Food according to Ayurveda

    • Rice– Red rice, old rice.
    • Cereals– Barley and wheat.
    • Pulses– Green gram, red gram.
    • Salt– Rock salt
    • Fruits– Pomegranate, Gooseberry (Amla), Palm dates, Grapes.
    • Vegetables– Snake gourd (Parval)
    • Water– Rainwater (minerals rich).
    • Fish– Rohu
    • Milk– Cow milk
    • Ghee– Cow ghee
    • Oil– Sesame oil

    Quantity of food

    One of the difficult questions to answer is, “How much a person should eat?” The quantity of food varies from person to person, based on the level of hunger, digestive power, what is the nature of the food to be eaten, what a person had eaten on the last meal, and whether the previously taken meal digested completely or not.

    In Ayurvedic dietetics, it has been clearly described that if a person divides one’s stomach into four parts, two parts should be filled with solid food, one part with liquid food, and one part empty.

    Practically it means that one should stop at that point when one gets the feeling that only a couple of more morsels can be taken. In general, a person should have a good amount of breakfast, a moderate amount of lunch, and a minimal amount of dinner.

    The quantity of food should be such that it gets digested before taking the next meal. So, if a person is taking only two meals per day, then comparatively the quantity of food can be more so that it keeps energized throughout the day, till the second meal is taken. If a person is taking 3-4 meals per day, then the quantity of food in each meal can be reduced.

    Suitable food types in different seasons By Dietetics

    • Winter– Sweet, sour, salty, and unctuous & hot foods.
    • Spring– Foods with bitter, pungent, and astringent taste. Dry and hot foods.
    • Summer– Sweet, light, easily digestible, and cool foods and drinks.
    • Monsoon– Sweet, sour, and salty foods. Light, fresh, and easily digestible.
    • Autumn– Foods with sweet, pungent, and astringent taste; dry and cool foods and drinks.

    Conclusion

    Ayurvedic texts explain the properties of food with seasons, time, and places and their specific function both in physiological and pathological states. A healthy dietetics is necessary for good health, which protects the body against many chronic non-communicable diseases, such as cardiac diseases, cancer, diabetes, etc.

    So, one should know the compatible and incompatible foods according to their health condition. “Your diet is a bank account, good food choices are good investments”. A person should know the basic rules of consuming food and the quantity of food.

    There are so many cases where one can see that after using so many medications also the ailments are not responding to the medicines, the reason is the intake of improper diets. One can also notice that some ailments don’t even need medication, they simply get corrected by taking proper dietetics.

    “When dietetics is wrong, medicine is of no use & When dietetics is correct, medicine is of no need”. It can be stated that when individuals pay attention to dietetics, they will be able to enhance health and well-being efficiently.

    Ayurveda, the ancient science of holistic healing, offers numerous therapies to cleanse and balance the body. Among these, Swedana Karma, or sweating therapy, holds a unique place. Derived from the Sanskrit word “Sweda,” meaning sweat, Swedana Karma is a technique used to stimulate sweating for therapeutic purposes. While sweating may seem like a natural bodily function, in Ayurveda, it is a controlled and potent method of detoxification, often used as a complementary therapy after oleation (Snehana) to help release toxins and balance the doshas.

    What is Swedana Karma?

    Swedana Karma is a carefully designed process that involves the application of heat to the body to induce sweating. This heat can be applied in various forms, such as steam, poultices, or dry heat. The goal of Swedana is to liquefy the ama (toxins) that have accumulated in the tissues and guide them toward the digestive system or skin for elimination.

    Types of Swedana Karma:

    Swedana Karma can be classified into different types depending on the method used to induce sweating. Each type of Swedana has its own unique benefits and is chosen based on the patient’s condition and doshic imbalance.

    1. Pinda Sweda (Bolus Therapy)
      In this method, herbal powders or pastes are wrapped in a cloth and applied to the body using rhythmic strokes. The warmth from the bolus, combined with the medicinal herbs, penetrates deep into the tissues, helping to relieve pain and stiffness.
    2. Bashpa Sweda (Steam Therapy)
      A popular form of Swedana, Bashpa Sweda involves the use of steam to induce sweating. Herbs are boiled in water, and the patient is exposed to the herbal steam. This therapy is particularly effective for relieving joint and muscle stiffness, clearing the skin, and promoting relaxation.
    3. Upanaha Sweda (Poultice Therapy)
      This method uses poultices made from herbal pastes, applied to specific areas of the body. Upanaha Sweda is especially effective for reducing inflammation, pain, and swelling in conditions like arthritis or joint injuries.
    4. Avagaha Sweda (Immersion Bath)
      In this method, the patient is immersed in a tub of warm, medicated water. This treatment helps soothe and relax the body, relieving pain and promoting detoxification through sweating.
    5. Nadi Sweda (Localized Steam Therapy)
      This is a targeted steam therapy where herbal steam is directed to specific parts of the body using a tube or hose. It is highly effective for localized pain relief, especially for joint and muscle conditions.

    When is Swedana Karma Performed?

    Swedana is typically done after the application of oils during Abhyanga (therapeutic massage) or other oleation therapies. The oil application lubricates and softens the tissues, allowing the heat from Swedana to penetrate deeper and draw out toxins. It is often a part of Panchakarma, Ayurveda’s comprehensive detoxification therapy, and can be customized according to the individual’s health concerns and constitution.

    Winter is a season that brings its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to keeping our bodies healthy and balanced. The cold weather can lead to dry skin, joint pain, allergies, and other discomforts, and our bodies respond differently during this time. According to Ayurveda, the ancient system of medicine, the change in seasons calls for a shift in our daily routines, diet, and lifestyle to maintain good health and harmony.

    Ayurveda focuses on preventive health and emphasizes aligning our habits with the natural rhythms of the seasons. By following Ayurvedic tips for winter, we can strengthen our immune system, maintain our vitality, and keep common seasonal issues at bay. These simple, yet effective practices help keep us healthy and energized, even in the coldest months.

     

    WINTER SEASON REGIMEN

    Disease-free condition is the best source of virtue, prosperity, pleasure, and liberation, while diseases are destroyers of this welfare and life itself. Now this has appeared as a barrier for human beings. The Ayurvedic system of medicine emphasizes preventive aspects, which can be achieved by changes in diet and practices in response to climatic conditions. One’s diet promotes strength and complexion only if they follow Ayurvedic health tips corresponding to different seasons, considering behavior and diet.

    The winter season in India begins during mid-November in Northern India and stays till February. December and January are the coldest months. During this season, the days are warm and shorter, and the nights are cold and longer.

    In the cold season, the skin becomes dry and appears to age. Dryness, dullness, roughness, and cracking of the skin are common in this season. During cold weather, the Vata dosha is more predominant, which is associated with qualities like cold, dry, light, and erratic. Along with the Vata dosha, Kapha dominates in winter, causing allergies, coughing, joint stiffness, etc.

    Digestive fire is at its strongest, so a person feels hungry often. Here are some of the most common disorders of the winter season and a proper routine and winter care based on Ayurvedic health tips to stay healthy during the cold weather.

     

    COMMON DISEASES IN WINTER

    • Common cough & cold
    • Throat infection
    • Ear infection
    • Flu (influenza)
    • Sinusitis
    • Allergic rhinitis
    • Joint Pain
    • Seasonal depression
    • Increased appetite & weight gain
    • Heart attacks
    • Respiratory ailments like asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, etc.
     

    AHARA (DIET) IN WINTER SEASON

    Include Honey, Cow ghee, jaggery, sesame seeds, tulsi leaves, and soaked nuts in your diet.

    Follow the foods according to body constitution or Doshas based on Ayurvedic health tips:

     

    Vata Dosha:

    People with dry skin, who feel very cold, and experience discomfort, pain, and aches, should take a nourishing diet like seeds, turnips, and ginger. Consume soups by adding carom seeds, asafoetida, and cumin seeds. Include spices like cinnamon, turmeric, cloves, and black pepper in your food. Add cow ghee to your lunch and dinner. Avoid refrigerated foods and foods that are cold in nature.

     

    Pitta Dosha:

    People with warm body nature should include sweet, bitter, and astringent foods in their diet, such as legumes and lentils with pure ghee, and fresh coconut. Eat fresh fruits and salads. Take whole grains and root vegetables like sweet potato, etc. Avoid sour and warming foods, including tamarind, cheese, bread, pineapple, grapes, and sour cream.

     

    Kapha Dosha:

    This type of person usually suffers from congestion and respiratory problems and should eat lighter, pungent, bitter, and astringent foods. Consume warm, fresh, and light meals cooked with very little oil or fat. The person can take herbal tea infused with ginger, cinnamon, tulsi, black pepper, and honey. Lukewarm water should be consumed throughout the day. Take vegetable soup at night. Avoid foods that are heavy to digest and dairy products. Deep-fried foods, bread, yeast, cold drinks, and sugar should not be consumed.

     

    VIHARA (DAILY ROUTINE) or LIFESTYLE IN WINTER

    • Take enough sleep at night for 6-8 hours, but prolonged sleep for more than 8 hours should be avoided as it increases stiffness in the body. Avoid daytime sleep in winter unless suffering from major ailments.
    • Before bedtime and after waking up in the morning, practice gargling with warm water by adding rock salt and turmeric powder.
    • Immediately after waking up, do some joint movement exercises in bed for a few minutes.
    • Walk for at least 35-45 minutes daily. Perform exercises or Yoga & Pranayama in the morning.
    • Before bathing, apply and massage the whole body with sesame or mustard oil.
    • Before going to bed, pour 2 drops of melted cow ghee or medicated oil into both nostrils.

    Yoga is an ancient science of India, and now it’s a well-organized and structured answer for various ultramodern problems. Yoga is not only physical activity but much more like a science of personal development, where it is necessary to put equal focus on the body, mind, and soul. The history of yoga can be traced back to the early Puranic and Vedic eras. Earlier, the focus was more on meditational practices, but in the present modernized and materialistic time, Yoga is gaining much more therapeutic values rather than spiritual values.

    In the era of urbanization, the occurrence of non-communicable diseases and lifestyle disorders is getting worse than communicable diseases. Every third person in society is suffering from stress, anxiety, and tension which ultimately leads to loss of work hours, money, health, and at last life. These problems are not only in one’s professional life but also in one’s personal life. The most efficient, easiest, and cost-effective solution for all these problems can be Yoga.

    It helps in the reduction of stress levels by inducing relaxation, cleansing the vital organs, and increasing the immunity level thereby giving the feeling of well-being. Lifestyle disorders like Diabetes, Hypertension, Thyroid, Obesity, and many more are at their peak in the present era, and the practice of Therapeutic Yoga can be well managed.     History of Yoga

    The history of yoga is long and rich. It can be divided into four main periods based on the practice of development. The first is Pre-classical Yoga, which began in the Indus Valley civilization in Northern India more than 5,000 years ago. Later, in the Rigveda, we can get the word Yoga which is derived from the word ‘Yuj’ which means ‘to unite.’ One of the most famous Yogic sacred texts is the Bhagavad Gita, composed around 500 B.C.E. The history of yoga is deeply intertwined with ancient scriptures, like the Puranas and Upanishads, which are filled with knowledge and importance of Yoga. 

    Second is Classical Yoga; it is defined by Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, traced back to 200, and is the first systematic presentation of Yoga, especially Raj Yoga. Patanjali, who is considered the father of Yoga, designed Yoga Sutras and Ashtanga Yoga (the eight-limbed path of Yoga) which is the path toward ‘Moksha’ or salvation. 

    The history of yoga during this classical period emphasizes the formal codification of the practice. Third is Post-Classical Yoga, which was mainly influenced by the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Gheranda Samhita, written during the 6th-15th century AD. These yogas were designed to rejuvenate the body and prolong life. The fourth period is the Modern period; during the 17th-18th century, great personalities like Ramakrishna Param Hansa, Swami Vivekananda, and Sri Aurobindo, gave a new dimension to Yoga and popularized it all over the world, marking another pivotal stage in the history of yoga.

    Different Styles of Yoga

    In the modern period, yoga has been designed in different styles depending on various factors like physical fitness, personal preferences, and specific health goals. Here are a few different styles of Yoga:

    Ashtanga Yoga

    It includes specific sequences of poses and helps to improve focus and discipline in life.

    Vinayasa Yoga

    It is known for its dynamic movements, with each pose smoothly transient to the next. It focuses on the flow and rhythm of movement, synchronizing with breath. It helps reduce stress and improves body awareness, focus, and concentration.

    Iyengar Yoga

    It is known for its proper alignment and attention in each pose. Props like straps, blocks, bolsters, chairs, etc. are used to achieve the correct posture.

    Hatha Yoga

    It is the basis of Yoga and better for beginners to start with. It combines static Asanas or postures and breathing.

    Kundilini Yoga

    It is a spiritual practice which aims to unlock the energy at the base of the spine. It helps in self-awareness and inner peace.

    Restorative Yoga

    It is a relaxing type of Yoga in which are postures are held for longer periods of time, sometimes with the support of props. It helps in reducing stress and promotes deep relaxation.

    Prenatal Yoga

    It is designed for pregnant women or women who are planning for pregnancy. It helps in reducing pregnancy-related stress and preparing the body for easy childbirth.

    One can only reduce the complications and increase the quality of life of the patient. One of the best solutions to these problems is Yoga. The history of yoga illustrates its development as a holistic method of therapy. Yoga, when started as therapy, can give you the best result and can prevent many further ailments and complications.

    Yoga improves physical, mental, intellectual, and spiritual health when adopted as a way of life. The discipline of Yoga gives a person a timeless and holistic model of health and healing. Although it may not help in the complete elimination of diseases, it offers a holistic path of healing and limits the adverse effects of the disease. Yoga is designed to achieve an indisputable connection between an individual’s overall physical and mental health well-being and inner peace.
